Large Markle Progress

By JIM BARBIERI
Markle continued infrastructure progress on all fronts over the past year.
Included were major strides on and toward sanitary sewers and storm drainage progress and further extensions of the past year’s big water system improvement program.
Disappointment was felt recently when the town failed to land a $450,000 Community Focus grant via the Indiana Department of Commerce for a $1.45 million program aimed to meet state requirements on eliminating CSOs (Combined Sewer Overflows). However, Markle was advised that the town narrowly missed a grant and should apply again for the next awards in November. This is being done.
Heading the progress parade over the past year has been the advancement of steps for a large new Industrial Park at the U.S. 224-I-69 key crossroads location.
Annexation was carried out in recent months. Awarded was the contract for extending the utilities, with lines to go under I-69. That construction is slated to get under way at the end of this month.
The Markle Town Council also acted this month to adopt an authorizing measure for a Redevelopment Commission and District to include the new industrial park plus a surrounding area in the western part of Markle and also along a sector of Ind.116.
This is to create eligibility for TIF (Tax Increment Funding) as a means to gain economic development funds for prospective needs ahead -- possibly an added water tower in the new industrial park in years ahead.
More procedural steps are ahead on the TIF implementing, but the die was cast for it this month.
Other major progress in Markle also has included the success of the new library facility on Morse Street (Ind. 116) across from MarkleBank.
In recent months action was taken to affiliate with the Huntington City Library.
A continuing issue has been the Emergency Medical Service and the possibilities for paramedic level services as town council members appear to favor in an ultimate outcome.
