Wayne L. Harnish, 76, passed away at 2:45 p.m., Friday Feb. 8, 2013 at Heritage Pointe, Warren, with his family around him.
Born in Bluffton on Tuesday, May 12, 1936 to Gerald and Alice (Riddile) Harnish, he married Shirley Jean Lockwood on July 21, 1954; she survives in Van Buren.
Wayne was a graduate of Rockcreek Township High School, class of 1954. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1954 to 1956, most of the time in Fort Meade, Md. Wayne was retired from the Farm Bureau Insurance Co, as an property claims specialist, after 32 years of service.
He was a former member of the Van Buren American Legion Post 368 for several years, a member of the Central Christian Church of Van Buren, a longtime member of the Palomino Horse Breeders of America, the Arbor Trace Senior Golf League, and the Fort Wayne Adjusters Assoc.
Wayne volunteered his time to keep the town of Van Buren with flowers at the Van Buren Park and other places in town for 10 years. His work was greatly appreciated by the people of Van Buren. He also greatly enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren. One of his favorite passions was woodworking, especially making toy boxes for his grandkids and great grandkids. He also loved classical music, enjoyed his pipe and was an avid Colts fan. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Brent (Julie) Harnish of South Bend and Brian (Cindy) Harnish of Walkerton; four daughters, Jennifer (Denny) Southers of Swayzee, Jean (Victor) Brady of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Jill (Dennis) Huston of Marion,, and Judi (Kirk) Kitts of Elwood; 13 grandchildren, Heather Springer, Troy Harnish, Jaclyn Wheeler, Dustin Harnish, Jeff Brady, Jonathan Brady, Tyler Brady, Megan Kilner, Amiee Huston, Katie Huston, Olivia Kitts, Faith Kitts, Hope Kitts; 9 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Karen Harnish of Sun Lake, Ariz.
Wayne was preceded in death by his mother and father; and two brothers, Dale and Jerry Harnish.
A service to celebrate Wayne’s life will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Van Buren Central Christian Church, 102 South 1st St., Van Buren with brother-in-law Rev. Don Lockwood officiating, assisted by Rev. Victor Brady, Rev. Jeffrey Brady and Pastor Heath Jones. Burial will follow in the St. Paul Cemetery, Wells County.
Family and Friends may gather to share and remember on Monday Feb. 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Van Buren Central Christian Church, 102 South 1st St. Van Buren.
