W. Leon Goodmiller, 79

W. Leon Goodmiller, 79 of Huntington, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home.
Leon was a 1951 graduate of Lancaster High School. He graduated from Manchester College in 1955 with a bachelor of science degree. He earned a master’s degree from Ball State University in 1960. He was a member of Faith Chapel United Methodist Church, the Huntington County Community School Corporation Retired Teachers Association, the Indiana State Retired Teachers Association, the Huntington North Athletic Hall of Fame, and was a supporting member of the Historic Forks of the Wabash Park.
He enjoyed farming in Lancaster and Rock Creek Townships before his retirement. He had coached Little League and Pony League in the Huntington County Baseball organization for several years.
For 38 years he taught math at Lancaster Township High School, Huntington High School, and Huntington North High School, retiring in 1993. He was well known for his service as a longtime basketball and baseball coach. He served Huntington North High School’s athletic director from 1969 to 1976.
He was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Lancaster Township of Huntington County to Warren U. Goodmiller and Opal J. Funderburg Goodmiller. He married Marvel E. McClurg June 6, 1954, at the Markle Church of the Brethren. His wife survives.
Additional survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Joan (Roger) Warner of Huntington, Mrs. Jane (Patrick) Botts of Muncie, and Mrs. Sara (Brian) Weidman of Greenwood; a son, David (Cheryl) Goodmiller of Bluffton; nine grandchildren, Lori Alwine, Kari Peters, Erica Bucholtz, Krista Verba, Benjamin Botts, Rhett Goodmiller, Nolan Weidman, Adam Botts and Lauren Weidman; and five great-grandchildren with a sixth one on the way.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the funeral home with Pastor Diana Siegel and Chaplain Mike Smith officiating.
Interment will be at the Lancaster Cemetery.
