Jesse L. Rogers, 82, of Warren and formerly of the Southern Wells community, passed away at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz.
He was born Friday, Aug. 28, 1931, in Blackford County. He married Kathryn Janet Waltz Sunday, Feb. 28, 1954, in the Zion Lutheran Church in Hartford City; she survives in Warren.
Jesse was a longtime Wells and Blackford county dairy farmer before moving to Warren. He graduated in 1949 from Montpelier High School and had attended Purdue University.
He had been a Wells County commissioner for four years, served as the Wells County Farm Bureau president, served on the Wells County Health Board, the Wells County Zoning Board and was a member of the Gideon’s and the Zion Lutheran Church in Hartford City. Jesse had honorably served in the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division.
He and his wife had wintered in Mesa, Ariz. since 2005.
Survivors include four daughters, Karen Sue (Guy) Studebaker of Rossville, Louise Annette (Gregory) Reynolds of Monroe, Loretta Kay McCormick of Kokomo, and Marlene Jo (Jay) Redding of Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Oscar Rogers; his mother, Opal Ethel Schwarzkopf Rogers; and two brothers, David Paul Rogers and Merle Lloyd Rogers.
Family and friends may gather to share and remember at Walker & Glancy Funeral Home, 109 W. Windsor St. in Montpelier, Friday, March 7, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 7. There will also be viewing at the Zion Lutheran Church, 308 S. Monroe St. Hartford City, Saturday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service.
A service to celebrate Jesse’s life will be at Zion Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, with Rev. David Fleener officiating. Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F Cemetery in Montpelier. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the U.S. Army.
