Betty Lou Petzel, 88

Betty Lou Petzel, 88, of Spring Hills, Fla., a former Bluffton resident passed away Thursday evening, Sept. 5, 2013, at the Sturgill Hospice Care Center.
Mrs. Petzel was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Bluffton, to Dale D. Neusbaum and Marie Schlagenhauf Neusbaum. She graduated from Bluffton High School with the class of 1943 and played the organ at the First Methodist Church on Sunday evenings through high school. She graduated from the Lutheran School of Nursing in Fort Wayne and started her career of serving others as a registered nurse.
On Oct. 6, 1946, in the First Methodist Church in Bluffton, Betty married Homer E. Petzel. They shared the last 66 years of marriage together.
Mrs. Petzel worked as an R.N. supervisor at the Caylor-Nickel Clinic for 22 years before moving to Florida.
While in Bluffton she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the First United Methodist Church, the Bluffton Elks Lodge, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Survivors include her husband, Homer, of Spring Hills, Fla.; a daughter, Karyl A. Maiorana of Mableton, Ga.; a son, Todd E. Petzel of Essex, Conn.; and four grandchildren, Wendy Tomlinson, Larry Geist, Sarah Petzel, and Rebecca Petzel; and two great-grandchildren, Mark Tomlinson and Brett Tomlinson.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Hoopingarner.
Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Thoma/ Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Old Salem Cemetery.
