Violet M. (Ritchey) Banter, 99
Violet M. (Ritchie) Banter, 99, of Warren, died at 7:05 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at Heritage Pointe.
Mrs. Banter was born on in Dillman on Dec. 29, 1910, to William A. and Sarah Pearlie (Williamson) Ritchey. She married Jason A. Banter in Bluffton on Aug. 30, 1930; he preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1985.
Mrs. Banter was a homemaker, an avid reader, quilter and loved to sew. She spent most of her life in Jackson Twp. in Wells County. She was a member of the Dillman United Brethren In Christ Church. She was also a member of the Dillman Ladies Aid and Church Missionary Society, and Jackson Twp. Home Ec. Club. She had visited all 50 states and she enjoyed traveling.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Jack R. (Ruth) Banter of North Manchester and Rex J. (Michelle) Banter of Dillman; six daughters, Ellen I. (Gary) King of Fort Wayne, Ileen M. (Bill) Maxwell of Noblesville, Linda L. (Wendell) King of Bluffton, Joyce S. (Don) Thornett of Fairfax, Va., Joan A. (George) Springer of Bluffton, and Wanda K. Mason of Bluffton; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Gene A. Banter.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 8, at the Glancy - H. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 203 N. Matilda St., Warren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9 at the Dillman United Brethren In Christ Church with Pastor Dick Frederick, Pastor Dick Case and Pastor Larry Taylor officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Warren.

Kenneth L. Schwartz, 82
Kenneth L. Schwartz, 82, of Bluffton, died at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 at Christian Care Retirement Community.
Mr. Schwartz was born in Adams County on Oct. 12, 1927 to Joel and Sarah (Nussbaum) Schwartz. He married Elizabeth Bertsch in Bluffton on Dec. 11, 1949; she survives.
Mr. Schwartz served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a press man at E. P. Graphics Printing in Berne, and he also worked at Heyerly’s Market. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church.
Other surviving relatives include two sons, Jim Schwartz of San Diego and Jack (Diane) Schwartz of Bluffton; two daughters, Jean (Craig) Steffen of Ossian and Joan (Greg) Gerber of Bluffton; two brothers, Howard (Beulah) Schwartz of Bluffton and Les (Sally) Schwartz of Berne; two sisters, Luella (Vernon) Geisel of Keystone and Mildred Schladenhauffen of Bluffton; and 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Schwartz was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Sandy Schwartz, and two great-grandsons, Gabriel Schwartz and Taylor Maller.
Calling hours will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton and from 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Apostolic Christian Church East. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be at the Apostolic Christian Cemetery.

Helen Irene Murray Bryan, 86
Helen Irene (Murray) Bryan, 86, Geneva, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at the Swiss Village in Berne.
She was born May 4, 1923, in Wells County, to Clell Murray and Nellie Harris Murray. She married Paul E. Bryan, who survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Randall and Jeffrey; three brothers, Earl Murray, Robert Murray, and Ned Murray; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ned Murray, and a sister, Crystal Miller.
Calling will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at the Swiss Village auditorium in Berne. Services are scheduled for Monday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. at Swiss Village. Burial will follow at the Albertson Cemetery.

Donald E. Davis, 89
Donald E. Davis, 89, of Poneto, died at 9:55 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at River Terrace Estates.
Mr. Davis owned and operated Davis Drilling for many years, drilling his first oil well at the age of 19 in Wells County. He drilled oil wells all over the country and helped discover the oil field in Hillsdale, Mich. Oil drilling was his life’s passion.
He also farmed in Wells County for more than 50 years.
He attended eight grades of school at Poneto and graduated in 1939 from Bluffton High School.
Mr. Davis was born June 22, 1920, in Poneto, to Arch Davis and Dale Buckner Davis. He married Martha Courtney Nov. 11, 1942, in Marion; his wife died Nov. 7, 2008.
Also surviving are two daughters, Gloria (Merlin) Dohrman of Keystone and Cynthia Cassell, and five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and a sister, Frances Marion Walsh.
Calling will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Cliff Rush officiating. Burial will be in a private mausoleum at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the Wells County Animal Shelter in care of the Wells County Foundation.

Dwight W. Glessner, 82
Dwight W. Glessner, 82, of Montpelier, died at 11:18 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Glessner was born on Aug. 6, 1927, in Wells County to Paul and Faye (Dawson) Glessner. He married Lois Joan “Joey” Fauerbach in Madison, Wis. on June 13, 1953; she preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra D. (Neil) King of Montpelier; three sons, Bradley D. (Jan) Glessner of Tavares, Fla., William P. (Teri) Glessner of Marion, and Stephen E. (Leslie) Glessner of Ocala, Fla.; and four brothers, Ralph A. (Shirley) Glessner of Montpelier, Jesse Glessner of Hartford City, John (Rose) Glessner of Greenville, Ohio, and Robert (Patty) Glessner of Huntington.
Mr. Glessner was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa D. Morrison; three sisters, Peggy Chehade, Nora Henchen and Nettie Glessner; and four brothers, Billy Glessner, Jack Glessner, Roger Glessner and Ronald Glessner.
Calling will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Walker & Glancy Funeral Home, Montpelier. The Montpelier Lions Club will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Asbury Cemetery in Wells County.

Sarah M. Wearly, 96
Sarah M. Wearly, 96, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.
She was born Sept. 22, 1913, in Hartford City, to William J. Lightner and Opha A. Swaim Lightner. She married Robert E. Wearly, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Jerry) Wilhems and Ann (Roby) Wood, and a son, John (Chris) Wearly.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Lightner and Thomas Lightner, and two sisters, Mary Brandon and Martha Bowne.
A memorial service will be held Feb. 10 in the Spiritual Life Center of the Valley Presbyterian Church in Green Valley, Ariz. Entombment will be at a later date in the family mausoleum at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Montpelier. A memorial service will also be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Hartford City.
The Walker and Glancy Funeral Home in Montpelier is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara S. Preston, 62
Barbara S. Preston, 62, of Warren, died at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Heritage Pointe in Warren.
Mrs. Preston was an administrative assistant for Phil and David Souder at Heritage Pointe and had worked as a childcare provider the past seven years. She was active at the Solid Rock United Methodist Church in Warren, where she participated in the praise team, youth leadership, a shawl ministry, and in the S.O.S. program.
She was a 1966 graduate of Warren High School and had attended Ball State University.
She was born Jan. 6, 1948, in Warren, to Thomas Edwin Brown and Mary Schweikhardt Brown; her mother survives in Warren. She married Bruce E. Preston April 9, 1967, in Warren; her husband survives.
Also surviving are a son, Todd (Shelley) Preston of Warren; a daughter, Tracee (Steve) Pennington of Poneto; two granddaughters, Mallory Preston and Casey Pennington; four grandsons, Cole Preston, Will Pennington, Evan Pennington, and Trevor Pennington; two great-granddaughters, Jailynn Chase and Alexis Chase; a brother, Tom (Jan) Brown of South Bend; and several nieces and nephews.
Her father preceded her in death.
Calling will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at the Glancy-H. Brown and Son Funeral Home, 203 N. Matilda St., Warren. There will be additional calling from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Solid Rock United Methodist Church, 227 N. Main St., Warren. Services will be held at the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Chip Gast officiating. Interment will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Warren.

Ruben ‘Wayne’ Reber, 91
Ruben “Wayne” Reber, 91, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 at his residence.
Born in Adams County on May 25, 1918 to George and Hazel (Shady) Reber, he married Hilda Glasgow on Jan. 15, 1942. She preceded him in death in 2002.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Wayne served with the 11th Airborne, attaining the rank of 1st sergeant. He was later promoted by a Direct Battlefield Commission to 2nd lieutenant while serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
After leaving the army, Wayne worked at General Motors Delco Remy in Muncie for 35 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner, volunteering much of his time driving children back and forth to Shriner’s Hospital in Chicago. He retired in Fort Wayne, and then later moved to Florida to be closer to his daughter, Patricia, and son-in-law, Bill Young.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, and a son, John Wayne “Pete” Reber. He is survived by a daughter, Patricia, and son-in-law, Bill Young, who reside in Plantation, Fla. Other survivors include a grandson, Brandon Reber of Michigan, and several nieces and nephews of the Bluffton and Fort Wayne area in Indiana.
Memorial services will be held in Century Village in Pembroke Pines, Fla. on Friday, Feb. 5. Services will be held in Bluffton at a later date. Burial will be at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Bluffton.
Memorials can be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Chicago, and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Gene A. Banter, 78
Gene A. Banter, 78, of Marion, died at 4:49 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at Marion General Hospital.
Mr. Banter worked for Rainbow Enterprises in New Castle. He was an avid country music fan.
He attended Jackson Center High School in Wells County and lived his early years in Jackson Township in Wells County. Prior to moving to Marion, he lived at the Maplewood Home in Wells County.
He was born May 28, 1931, in Wells County, to Jason A. Banter and Violet M. Ritchey Banter. His mother survives in Dillman.
Also surviving are two brothers, Jack R. (Ruth) Banter of North Manchester and Rex J. (Michelle) Banter of Dillman; six sisters, Ellen I. (Gary) King of Fort Wayne, Ileen M.
