Lloyd Huffman, 79
Lloyd D. Huffman, 79, Indianapolis, passed away peacefully March 11, 2010.
He was born in Wells County on October 5, 1930. He graduated from Bluffton High School in 1948. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Vira Huffman, and one brother.
Lloyd was a petroleum dispatcher and retired from Country Mark, which was formerly Farm Bureau Co-op. He loved yard work and gardening, and enjoyed cheering for the Colts and Pacers.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of almost 60 years, Gerry Huffman; daughters, Karen (Bill) Campbell, Judy Huffman and Cyndie (Dr. Pablo) Santamaria; grandchildren, Matthew (Nancy) and Kyle Campbell, Samantha Huffman, and Michael and Kendall Santamaria; great-grandchildren, Avery, Isaac and Emma Campbell; and brother, Ernest Huffman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, at the Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center – Carmel, 325 E. Carmel Dr., with visitation two hours prior. Burial will follow in the Hamilton Memorial Park.

Opal I. Burnau, 94
Opal I. Burnau, 94, of Berne, died at 5:35 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
Mrs. Burnau was born in Huntington County on Dec. 8, 1915 to Jesse R. Decker and Bertha Elick Decker. She married Lowell M. Burnau in Markle on Nov. 23, 1935; he preceded her in death on March 25, 1975.
Mrs. Burnau graduated from East Rockcreek High School in 1933. She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Bluffton.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Janice Edris of Clinton and Joan Currier of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Alice Settlemeyer of Berne; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Burnau was preceded in death by a grand-daughter, Lori Bayless.

Dorothy A. Lewis, 91
Dorothy A. Lewis, 91, of Ossian, a former resident of Chesterton, died at 10:43 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Ossian Health Care.
Mrs. Lewis was born March 14, 1918, in Edgar, Neb., to James Taylor and Elizabeth Campbell Taylor. She married Everett Lewis Dec. 22, 1938, in Almena, Kan.; her husband died in September 1981.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth (Linda) Lewis of Bluffton; two daughters, Alice Prickett of Chesterton and Della Lewis of Otterbein; and two sisters, Della McCLure of Belton, Mo., and Irene Williams of Lagrand, Ore.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Paul Lewis.
Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Soller-Baker Funeral Homes’ West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West, West Lafayette. Services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday.

Rebecca J. ‘Becky’ England, 59
Rebecca J. “Becky” England, 59, of Huntington, died at 8:02 p.m., Monday, March 8, 2010, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Becky was born on May 22, 1950, in Bluffton, the daughter of Rev. Joseph and Virginia (Myers) Sumwalt. She graduated from Huntington High School in 1968. Becky married Rodger K. England on Aug. 22, 1980 in Huntington and he survives.
Becky was a homemaker, and a supervisor for five years at Economy Machine in Roanoke. Becky was also a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Huntington, and a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother.
Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Rodger K. England of Huntington; her parents, the Rev. Joseph and Virginia Sumwalt of Warren; a son, Thomas J. (Misty) Saunders of Huntington; a daughter, Nikki Saunders of Huntington; two brothers, Dan (Marsha) Sumwalt of Huntington and Bill (Sarah) Sumwalt of Huntington; a sister, Cynthia Sumwalt of Bluffton; and three grandchildren, Kristina, Arianna and Hayden Saunders of Huntington.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Devin Saunders.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 and from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 12, at the Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Dr., Huntington. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1555 Flaxmill Road, Huntington, with Pastor Kevin Dunlop and Gene Vickery officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Cemetery, Huntington County.

Lois Jean Driscoll Myers, 63, of Kingsport, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at her residence.
She is survived by her husband of more than 23 years, Charles W. Myers; two daughters, Leeann Fields of Bluffton and Rachel Ramseyer of Indiana; two sons, Keith Sowder, a member of the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., and Brian Myers of Kingsport, Tenn.; her mother, Rachael Myers of Fort Wayne; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Jo Gibson of Michigan, Janet Tabor of Oklahoma, Nancy Mobley of Indiana and Delores King of Indiana; three brothers, Mike Driscoll, Bruce Driscoll and Clifford Driscoll, all of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Walter H. Driscoll, and two sisters, Iris Hendrick and Rebecca Driscoll.

Nona O. Volz, 84
Nona O. Volz, 84, of Montpelier, died at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Renaissance Specialty Hospital in Muncie.
Mrs. Volz, a lifetime resident of Blackford County, retired in 1976 from Franklin Electric in Bluffton. She had been a member of the Millard-Brown American Legion Post 156 Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.
She was a 1943 graduate of Montpelier High School and was a member of the Montpelier High School Alumni Association. She served for several years as the secretary of the Montpelier Jamboree. She was also a member of the Montpelier Historical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Dinnerbell Band.
She was born July 18, 1925, in Blackford County, to Carl Truman Bedwell and Helen Garnet Pence Bedwell.
Survivors include four sons, John Michael Volz of Marion, Thomas Alan Volz of Mayslick, Ky., Carl Eugene Volz of Brownstown, and David Mark Volz of Pennville; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Max Bedwell of Dunkirk, James Bedwell of Sevierville, Tenn., and Dexter Bedwell of Marion; and a sister, Peg Stairs of Jalapa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, William C. Volz; and a brother, Harold Bedwell.
Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 12, at the Walker and Glancy Funeral Home, 109 W. Windsor St., Montpelier. A prayer service and recitation of the rosary will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. LaVera M. Heckley, 91
LaVera M. Heckley, 91, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Ossian, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Kingston Residence in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Heckley was born in Ossian on July 31, 1918, to Arthur and Alma (Springer) Young. She married Wendell Heckley; he preceded her in death in October of 2009.
Mrs. Heckley worked at Ossian State Bank for 20 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Bill (Betty) Heckley of Fremont and Larry (Judy) Heckley of Erie, Colo.; a brother, Norman Young of North Carolina; a sister, Darlene Hoover of North Manchester; and three granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren.

Everett K. King, 79
Everett K. King, 79, of Bluffton, passed away at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Mr. King was born Jan. 11, 1931, in Wells County, to Everett E. King and Mabel Esther (Schwartz) King. He married Kathleen “Kathy” Durham Jan. 17, 1954, in Wells County. His wife survives.
Mr. King graduated from Bluffton High School in 1948 and served in the Indiana National Guard from 1950 to 1957. At the time of his discharge he held the rank of sergeant.
Mr. King was a lifelong resident of Wells County. He worked in the engineering department at Magnavox for 28 years retiring in 1990. He was a member of the “over the hill gang” at Magnavox and attended Grace Baptist Church.
Everett was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Loronda Mahon of Columbus, Ind., and Kelli L. Craighead of Fort Wayne; two sons, Charles D. “Chuck” (Tammy) King of Bluffton and Bruce D. (Cynthia) King of Kokomo; and 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Karl K. King, and a sister, Ina Dickerson.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 12, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home. Maxine Markley Thompson, 88
Maxine Markley Thompson, 88, of Liberty Center, passed away at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Her loving family was at her side at the time of death.
Maxine was born Sept. 16, 1921, to Ralph E. Markle and Mary Alice Garrett Markley in the home of her grandparents, Frank and Elizabeth Garrett, located in Liberty Center.
She was a very proud graduate of Bluffton High School in the class of 1939. As a young girl, Maxine worked in her father’s store, Markley’s Grocery, on West Market Street in Bluffton, until her marriage. Over the years she also worked at the Caylor-Nickel Clinic, the Progress 5 & 10 Store and retired in 1989 from the J. C. Penney store in Bluffton.
Maxine loved spending time with her family, cooking and sewing. She was a 70-year member of the Boehmer United Methodist Church where she faithfully served in many roles. She was also a 60-year member of the PBS Club.
Maxine married John Ware Thompson Oct. 3, 1939 in the parsonage of the Liberty Center United Methodist Church. They shared nearly 62 years of marriage together before he passed away Jan. 29, 2001.
She is survived by two sons, Jim Thompson of Liberty Center and Dick Thompson of Bluffton. She was also very proud of her four grandchildren — Jeff (companion Tonya) Thompson of Fort Wayne, Jami (Tim) Prough, Jennifer (Chris) Earhart, and Troy McAfee all of Bluffton; her six great-grandchildren — Derek (fiancé Lacey) Prough, Jobe Thompson, Shelby Earhart, Josh Thompson, Trevor Prough and Jaci Prough; and her great-great-grandson, Jason Prough. She is also survived by a sister, Ellen Green Moore of Sun City, Ariz., a former daughter-in-law Cheryl (Thompson) Mann, of Bluffton; and a former son-in-law, Roger McAfee, also of Bluffton.
She is preceded in death by a son, Bill Thompson; a daughter, Joyce Ann McAfee; and a sister, Patty Jo Perkins.

John Robert Ryan, 25
John Robert Ryan, 25, of Bluffton, passed away at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2010, in Whitley County.
Mr. Ryan was born Oct. 13, 1984, in Kansas City, Mo. He was a 2003 graduate of Homestead High School and has worked as a cabinet maker for Key Millwork in Fort Wayne.
John loved hockey. His favorite teams were the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a goalie for the Homestead High School hockey team, including the City Championship.
Survivors include his father, Glenn A. (wife Rhonda) Ryan of Bluffton; his mother, Rhonda (Michael) Kronley of Tulsa, Okla; two sisters, Jocelyn Ryan of Tulsa, Okla., and Jennifer Carden of East Grand Rapids, Mich.; two stepsisters, Heather (Todd) Morgan of Bluffton and Ail (Kate) Kronley of Philadelphia, Pa.; and two stepbrothers, Heath (Wendy) Schlagenhauf of Bluffton and Neal (Caroline) Kronley of New York City, N.Y. John is also survived by his grandparents, John and Dorothy Ryan of Toledo, Ohio, and Donald and Phyllis Gantz of Pratt, Kan. He is also survived by three nephews.

Blanch R. Mann, 94, of Bluffton, died at 11 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010, at the Ossian Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Mann was born Dec. 20, 1915, in Lee Valley, Tenn., to Auburn Osborne and Alpha Riley Osborne. She married Joe Mann, who preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, James. H. Mann of Bluffton; and two daughters, Joan Rudder of Dungannon, Va., and Phillis Osborne of Kingsport, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.

Linda M. Morgan, 75, of Warren, died Monday, March 8, 2010, at Heritage Pointe in Warren.
Mrs. Morgan was born Dec. 13, 1934, in Marion, to Garl Burton Apt and Vivian Geraldine Hillsamer Apt. She married Gerald I. Morgan in Warren in 1954; her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Dale Morgan of Warren and Ronnie Morgan of Saudi Arabia; a sister, Cynthia (Glen) Mangee of Hopewell, N.J.; and a brother, Timothy (Rita) Apt of Athens, Ala.

Oscar E. Andrews, 82
Oscar E. Andrews, rural Bluffton, died at 9:48 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010, which was his 82nd birthday.
Mr. Andrews had worked for Franklin Electric for more than 40 years as head of the Specialty Design Group. He later did consultant work for Franklin Electric. He was a 1946 graduate of Bluffton High School.
He attended the Park United Brethren Church and had served as a leader for Boy Scout Troop 140.
Mr. Andrews was born March 6, 1928, in Wells County, to Harold P. Andrews and Clara I. Minnich Andrews. He married Lorene Fosnaugh Nov. 1, 1946, in Bluffton; his wife preceded him in death on Feb. 28, 2008
Survivors include two sons, Chris A. Andrews of Camby and Jon N. Andrews of Bluffton; a daughter, Ann Marie Pommer of Bluffton; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth Andrews, who resides in Washington state.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael Andrews and Earl Andrews, and three sisters, Janie Andrews, Bonnie Steffen, and Betty Bowman.

Robert and Marjorie Blue, both 81
Robert Lee Blue and Marjorie Joan Blue, both 81, of Rochester and formerly of Miami County, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010 near Tampa, Florida as the result of a motor vehicle accident.
Bob and Marge were both born July 22, 1928. They were married on October 15, 1949 in Cass County and had just celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Bob was born in Miami County to Robert Warren and Ruth E. Bowman Blue and he graduated from Peru High School. He was a member of the Macy Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne Valley. He enjoyed woodworking and the fellowship with his friends at breakfast in Rochester. Bob began his career with the Nickel-Plate Railroad and retired from Norfolk-Southern as the station agent in Bluffton.
Marge was born in Howard County, Indiana, to Charles T. and Thelma Eldridge Polk. She spent most of her adolescent years in the home of Charles and Ella Woods in Onward where she helped in their general store. Marge was a hospitality expert and enjoyed hosting guests in her home at the lake. She was an excellent cook, and had worked for several years as an Avon representative.
Together, Bob and Marge attended the First Baptist Church in Rochester where they had made their church home for the past several years. They had formerly attended the Peru Grace Brethren Church. Bob and Marge enjoyed camping for many years with the Miami County Campers. They loved playing in neighborhood card games in Rochester, Peru, and in Florida. Bob and Marge retired in Rochester on Lake Manitou where they were active in the Lake Manitou Association.
Survivors include their children, Linda Jo Davenport of Rochester; and son Gregory Alan Blue and wife Teresa of Fifield, Wis.; five grandchildren, Joseph (Jackie) Davenport of Phoenix, Ariz. and their children, Kaily and Kaiden; Jessie Davenport of Rochester; Jodie Davenport of Bloomington; Kelly Blue of Waukesha, Wis.; and Katie (Daniel) Schilling of Oostburg, Wisconsin.
Marge leaves behind her brother, Sylvan “Pete” (Kathy Sue) Polk of Peru and their children, James (Christel) Polk, Patrick (Deidre) Polk, Jacqueline (David) Sipe, and Nancy (Dennis) Gariss.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Peru Grace Brethren Church with Pastor Mark Spencer, Pastor Dave Jodry, and Pastor Ronald Bowland officiating.

Surviving relatives include her mother, of Hartford City; her father, of Bluffton; her stepfather, Carl W. Clem of Hartford City; a son, Toby McCallister of Redkey; and a brother, Jeffery A. (Heidi) Norris of Hartford City.

Frances Elizabeth Stamper, 91, of Hartford City, the mother of a Montpelier resident, died at 3:58 a.m. Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
Mrs. Stamper was born May 19, 1918, in Muncie, to Basil Pickett and Cleo Leona Gray Pickett. She was twice married; both of her husbands, Lawrence Davis and Garrett Stamper, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Richard (Ruth) Davis of Plymouth; two daughters, Patricia Jo Ann O’Neal of Sylvania, Ohio, and Cleo “Kay” (Bill) Litteral of Montpelier; and nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma Jean Pickett; three stepsons, Baird Davis, Byron Davis, and Bruce Davis; a brother, Robert Pickett; and a sister, Dorothy June Pickett.

William “Mac” Smith, 74
William “Mac” Smith, 74, Geneva, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 4, 2010 near Geneva.
Born on June 28, 1935 in Adams County to Godfred William and Laura Opal Smith, both deceased. He married Catherine M. Habegger on Oct. 14, 1956; she survives.
“Mac” was a member of the First Mennonite Church of Berne. He was an accomplished mason and master craftsman in the area. He was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers. He was also a member of the Loyal Workers Sunday School Class. He loved to travel, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid gardener.
In addition to his wife of Geneva, he is survived by two sons, Tony Smith of Indianapolis and Fred (Lori) Smith of Fishers; a daughter, Becky (Kent) Werst of Geneva; two brothers, Harold and Tim Smith; two sisters, Grace Whetstone and Veda Edwart; and seven grandchildren: Michael and Jessica Smith, Parker and Logan Smith, Jackson, Jacob and Isaac Werst.
He was preceded in death by siblings: Catherine Summers, Mildred Boice, Jane Knipstein, Walter Smith and Harry Smith.
Serices will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Mennonite Church in Berne with Rev. Jerry Flueckiger officiating. Calling hours are Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne and Monday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be in the M.R.E. Cemetery in rural Berne. Preferred memorials are to the First Mennonite Church Missions.

Beth A. Followill, 50, of Bluffton, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Followill was born in Carlsbad, N.M. on May 7, 1959 to Charles and Merne (Hollingsworth) Abernathy. She married Mark Followill in Merkel, Texas on Jan. 15, 2007; he survives.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Krysta (Mark) Young of Fort Wayne and Tara Ireland of Auburn; one son, Justin Mabe of Monroeville; two step-daughters, Jennifer Mabe of Fort Wayne and Amy Followill of Lubbock, Texas; one brother, Perry (Barbara) Abernathy of Albuquerque, N.M.; and two sisters, Janet (Lex) Allgood of Lake Brownwood, Texas and Holly (Chris) Grimes of Decatur, Ga.
Calling hours will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 8 and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Bluffton.
