Dorma M. Johnson, 85
Dorma M. Johnson, 85, died at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, in Christian Care Retirement Community.
Born in Wells County to Raymond A. and Lola M. (Miller) Haflich on March 31, 1922, she married Donald K. Johnson in Bluffton on Oct. 2, 1945; he preceded her in death on July 18, 1951.
A 1940 graduate of Bluffton High School, Mrs. Johnson worked as a book keeper at Caylor-Nickel Clinic for 25 years, retiring in 1985. Prior to that she had worked for 10 years at the Farmers & Merchants Bank in Bluffton. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Uniondale, and Sigma Phi Gamma.
Surviving relatives include four daughters, Diana (Ned) Shappley of Lexington, Ky., Linda (James) Fritz of Bluffton, Jo Anne (Ron) Bowman of Bluffton and Sylvia Solomon of San Clemente, Calif.; one sister, Norma (James) Smith of Bluffton; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Johnson was also preceded in death by a grandson.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Kinney officiating. Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home. Burial is at Elm Grove Cemetery, in Bluffton.
Preferred memorials are to the Christian Care Retirement Center or St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Uniondale.
Norman E. Dobson, 76
Norman E. Dobson, 76, of rural Bluffton, died at 12:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Born in Howard, Pa. to Preston and Virginia (Strunk) Dobson on April 13, 1931, Mr. Dobson married Pat L. Meyer in Bluffton on Dec. 11, 1953; she survives.
Mr. Dobson worked as a self-employed refrigeration repair man for 33 years, a meat cutter at Heyerly’s & Dobson’s Meat Markets for 25 years, and as a News-Banner motor route carrier for eight years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and was a volunteer with the Bluffton Fire Department for 32 years. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion.
Other surviving relatives include one son, Robert E. “Bob” Dobson of Bluffton; one daughter, Lisa A. Gregg of Bluffton; two brothers, John P. Dobson of Markle and Chad V. High of St. Joseph, Mich.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Dobson was preceded in death by a sister.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel in Bluffton with Bruce Holland officiating. Calling hours will be from 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. American Legion Post 111 will be in charge of military rites.
Preferred memorials are to the Hospice of North East Indiana or the Bluffton Volunteer Fire Department.
Bruce Alan Hunter, 79
Bruce Alan Hunter, 79, of Bluffton, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, at his residence.
Born in Ossian to Halden H. and Florence L. (Hatfield) Hunter, on Nov. 12, 1928, he married Beverly S. Barrick in Rockcreek Township on Dec. 31, 1948; she survives.
Mr. Hunter retired from Farm Bureau in 1990, having worked as an agent there for 19 years. He was a former part-owner of Hunter Supply House for 23 years. He was also a member of the Ossian Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion Post 111 in Bluffton, Timber Ridge Golf Club and the Ossian United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives also include one son, “Tad” (Lori) Hunter of Cedaredge, Colo.; one daughter, Sue Ellen “Susy” (Larry) Jones of Bluffton; one brother, Larry Hunter of Ossian; and six grandchildren.
Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Hunter, and one grandson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home in Ossian with the Rev. Tim Dilley officiating. Calling hours will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial is at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the Ossian United Methodist Church or Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana.
Linda L. Smith, 61
Linda L. Smith, 61, of Ossian, died at 6:49 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born in Huntington County to Jack and Ruth “Lola” (Ormsby) Miller on Oct. 28, 1946, she married James C. Smith in Bluffton in June, 1966; he survives.
A graduate of Ossian High School, Mrs. Smith was a homemaker.
Other surviving relatives include one son, Steve L. Smith of Ossian; one daughter, Amy Jo (Travis) Searles of Bluffton; one sister, Karen Hostetler of Bluffton; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Scott Smith.
Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton, with Pastor Gary Aupperle officiating. Calling hours will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial is at Fairview Cemetery, in Bluffton.
Preferred memorials are to the Angel of Hope Park with checks payable to the Wells County Foundation, or to the family.
Rosamond D. Whybrew Stepp, 78
Rosamond D. Whybrew Stepp, 78, of Keystone, died at 2:55 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Born in Blackford County to Albert E. and Dorothy (Cromer) Deardruff on Feb. 18, 1929, she married twice. Her first husband, Myron Whybrew preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1988. Her second husband, Charles Stepp, survives.
A 1947 graduate of Montpelier High School, Mrs. Stepp worked as a secretary for the Montpelier Community Schools for 18 years. She was an active member of the Pleasantdale United Methodist Church and the Helping Hand Church Group.
Other surviving relatives include two daughters, Kathy (Gary) Goodspeed of Hartford City, and Linda (Michael) Shewalter of Bluffton; two stepsons, Charles D. Stepp of Montpelier and Tim (Debra) Stepp of Keystone; one stepdaughter, Cynthia (Mark) Callahan of Arlington, Texas; four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Stepp was also preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Deardruff, a stepson, Tom Stepp and a great-grandson, Ziggy Howie.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at the Glancy Funeral Homes Walker Chapel in Montpelier with Pastors Tom Bradley and Darren Williams officiating. Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial is at the Gardens of Memory in Muncie.
Preferred memorials are to the Family Hospice of Northeast Indiana.
Sol Schwartz — memorials
Preferred memorials for Sol Schwartz, 82, the father of Bluffton residents, who died Dec. 5, 2007, are to the Solid Rock Bible Camp in Soldotna, Alaska.
Mr. Schwartz worked as a construction contractor and built such structures as a police/fire building, a Masonic Temple and a U.S. Post Office in towns in Indiana.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Evangelical Mennonite Church in Berne with Dr. Veryl Roth and Pastor Kent Fahl officiating.
Calling hours are from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel and from one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial is at the Evangelical Mennonite Church Cemetery.
