Ron DeWitt golf outing planned
The Bluffton High School Athletic Booster Club is hosting a golf scramble to raise money to help establish a scholarship fund in honor of former Bluffton athletics director and girls basketball coach Ron DeWitt.
The Ron DeWitt Memorial Scholarship golf outing will be held Aug. 11 at Timber Ridge golf course in Bluffton. Registration and lunch is from 10:30-11:30 a.m., preceeding an 11:45 a.m. shotgun start. Dinner and awards will be at 5 p.m.
Cost is $350 for “Tiger’’ registration (four players, hole sponsorship/sign on tee box/listing on donor list); $300 for a four-player team; $75 for individual registration.

Ball State Alumni outing June 21
The Adams-Wells Chapter of the Ball State Alumni Association will host its annual golf and dinner outing on Thursday, June 21 at Grey Goose Golf Club in Decatur. Special guests from Ball State will present a brief update of the school’s academic and athletic programs. The Florida scramble will begin with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Cost is $55, including green fees, cart, beverages, prizes and dinner. Anyone not able to play golf may attend the dinner at 5:30 p.m. for $8. Imel, O’Brien team up to place first
Norwell junior Kaylee Imel and Fort Wayne Bishop Luers senior Kristi O’Brien teamed up to win the 17-19 year-old age group in an Indiana Pepsi Junior Golf Tour girls team tournament Monday at Royal Oak Country Club in Greenwood.
Imel and O’Brien had five birdies and three bogeys on the par 73 course to finish at two under par.
State pre-sale tickets to be sold
Tickets for the Class 3A baseball state championship game at Victory Field on Saturday, June 16 will be on sale in the Norwell athletics office on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., Thursday 8-2 and Friday from 8-11 a.m. Ticket price is $9. Tickets also may be purchased at Victory Field.
There will be a team send-off at Norwell on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
Norwell also will be holding a season celebration on Sunday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.
Corrati records hole-in-one
Michael Corrati, 53, of Liberty Center hit a hole-in-one on the par three 15th hole at Cherry Hills golf course in Fort Wayne on Saturday, June 9. A 15-handicap golfer, Coratti used an eight iron on the 112-yard hole.
Metaldyne rallies to beat Mediacom
Trailing 8-6 after two innings, Metaldyne scored one run in the third inning and three more in the fourth to come back and defeat Mediacom 10-8 in a Bluffton Farm League baseball game Monday. Grant Prible was the winning pitcher and legged out a triple for Metaldyne. Bo Thompson added a double and single, while Mitchell Kuhlenbeck singled twice. Garrett Walburn was the losing pitcher and Tanner Thompson had the only hit for Mediacom.
National Oil outlasts F.O.P.
National Oil and F.O.P. locked up in an extra-inning Bluffton Farm League baseball game Monday night and National Oil scored two runs in the seventh inning to win 8-6. National Oil out hit F.O.P. 11-4. Hunter Schreiber had three of the 11. Stephen Applegate added a double and single, while Ben Shaffer chipped in with two basehits. Matthew Vitatoe was the winning pitcher. Andrew Hunter singled twice for F.O.P. and Grant Harris was the losing pitcher.
Wells Fargo out scores Pizza Hut
Wells Fargo scored three runs in the fifth inning to clip Pizza Hut 11-10 in a Bluffton Junior League baseball game Monday night. Jonathon Stech and Damon Kuhlenbeck each tripled and singled to lead Wells Fargo’s 11-hit attack. Kuhlenbeck pitched the last three innings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out nine batters to record the win. Jacob Miller, Andy Elwell and Kyler Fugate each added a pair of singles. Ben Pfister powered Pizza Hut with two doubles. Graham Denny and Taylor Graham each had two singles. Pizza Hut had 13 hits. Pfister was the losing pitcher.
Lightning wins doubleheader
The Indiana Lightning swept a baseball doubleheader from the Indiana Thunder 9-0 and 13-3 Sunday at Kendallville. Reece Dafforn threw a no-hitter, striking out 10 in game one. Tailur Szarenski hit a home run and single and drove in four runs. Nathan Shelton and Sam Harness also had two hits apiece. Robbie Ritter blasted a home run and Dafforn added three hits in game two. Cale Schumm notched the win for the Lightning.
WCST finishes second
The Wells Community Swim Team kicked off its season Saturday with a second-place team finish in the Wabash Valley Swim Conference Relays at the Jay County Pool in Portland. Jay County took first place. South Adams was third and North Adams fourth.
WCST will host three home meets at the Wells Community Pool on the following dates: Thursday, June 14 against North Adams; Tuesday, June 19 against Randolph County; and Tuesday, July 10 against South Adams.
Sign up for Norwell girls tennis camp
Registrations are now being taken for the 2007 Norwell Girls Tennis Camp for Northern Wells Community Schools students in grades 5-9 in 2007-08. The camp will be held June 18-19, 21-23 with morning sessions at the high school. Cost is $25. Terri Worden, the Norwell girls tennis coach, will conduct the camp.
