Bayh Backs St. Francis
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana has made a
double-or-nothing bet with Montana’s Senator Max Baucas on Saturday’s
NAIA National Championship football game between Saint Francis
University of Fort Wayne and Montana’s Carroll College.
Bayh said he is so confident of a USF victory that he wanted to up the
ante on a bet made last year with Baucus. Bayh agreed to put up a
bucket of Indiana-grown popcorn against Baucus’ Montana beer.
Carroll, which is 13-0, won its third national championship last year over Saint Francis 15-13.
The 50th annual national championship game will be played in Savannah, Tenn.
St. Francis (13-0) is going for its first national title. The Cougars
have lost only three games in the past four years — all in the playoffs
and twice in the championship game to Carroll.
Businessman Donates $5 Million to IPFW
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A Fort Wayne businessman is donating $5 million
to IPFW to build an indoor track and to fund athletic scholarships.
It’s the largest gift the university has ever received.
“I was trying to find the right vehicle to make a difference,” said
Larry Lee, owner of Leepoxy Plastics and a former competitive runner.
“I identified IPFW as a diamond in the rough. It was an untapped asset.
I honestly believe there is no great city without a great university.”
The donation includes $1 million for an indoor track in the Student
Services Complex, which will allow IPFW to expand, remodel and connect
Hilliard Gates Sports Center, Walb Student Union and the Helmke Library.
The remaining $4 million will go into a trust fund that will be used
for athletic scholarships after the 61-year-old Lee and his wife die.
The Lees have one daughter at IPFW and another daughter who competes at Homestead High School. Both of them are runners.
