Tigers Beat Whitko in Hardcourt Action
The Bluffton Tigers tennis team racked up a 4-1 victory over the Whitko Wildcats Thursday at Bluffton.
Bluffton's No. 1 singles player Jacob Castilow came back to defeat Calvin Sellers in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1.
The Tigers swept the varsity singles matches with Adrian Larrea downing
Brett King 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 match and Nathan Baker sweeping
Brandon Reiff 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 contest.
Of the two doubles matches, Bluffton's No. 1 tandem of Zack Anderson
and Nick Brinneman outlasted Chris Shoemaker and Shannon Sleighter 6-4,
7-5. Whitko's Taylor Kessie and Dan Aldea beat Blane Baumgartner and
Jon Dauterman 6-4, 6-0.
The Bluffton junior varsity squad mopped up with a 4-0 win. Matthew
Gerber topped Andrew Nicodemus 8-6. Lorenzo Gratton defeated Adam
Nicodemus 8-5. Clint Baumgartner and Gary Green downed Ben Ogden
and Andrew Nicodemus 8-4. Trent Scott and Drew Neuenschwander beat Ben
Wagner Adam Nicodemus 8-1.
Norwell Netmen Swat Down Jets
The Norwell Knights boys tennis team dealt the Adams Central Jets their
first loss of the season, edging the Jets 3-2 on Thursday at Norwell.
Norwell won one of the three singles matches and both doubles matches to down the Jets.
Jason Isch defeated the Jets' Dan Kaehr 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in No. 2 singles.
Michael Huffman and Blake Gehring teamed up to beat Alex Lengerich and
Justin Kaide 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles. Blake Fiechter and Brian
Nahrwold topped Jared Grandlienard and Dusty Garwood 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2
doubles.
The Jets' Brandon Barger upped his record to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-0
victory over David Brege in No. 1 singles. Ethan Fiechter topped Jeremy
Heiser 6-3, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.
Norwell's junior varsity squad also netted a 3-2 victory. Justin Koch
beat AC's Albert Andrews 8-4 and the Knights' doubles also won. Jeremy
McGrew and Tim Baker defeated Landon Wheeler and Kyle Andrews 8-4.
Blaine Mosser and Justin Thomas outdueled Adam Gerber and Jon Kuntzman
8-7 (7-4).
AC reserves Nathan Aschliman and Danny Dowler were singles winners. Aschliman beat Koch 8-3 and Dowler topped Levi Gerber 8-6.
Lady Raiders Notch First Win
The Southern Wells Raiders girls volleyball team battled back to defeat
the Mississinewa Indians 3-2 on Thursday night for the Raiders' first
victory of the 2005 season.
Mississinewa took the Lady Raiders into the fifth and final game and
Southern Wells came out on top 15-11. The Indians won games one and
four 25-11 and 25-18, while Southern Wells won the second and third
games 25-20 and 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Raiders are now 1-3 and 0-1 in Allen County Athletic Conference action.
Katie Schenkel led the Lady Raiders with 9 kills, 1 block, 6 assists, 4
aces and 16 digs. Lia Gentis had 8 kills and 2 blocks. Leslie Moser
added 5 kills and 12 assists. Sierra Dollar had 3 kills. Heather Ragg
had 14 assists, 6 aces and 10 digs. Sondra Frantz had 23 digs. Gentis
added 15 digs.
In the other three matches, Eastbrook beat the Lady Raiders 25-23,
25-10, 25-12, Southwood won 25-9, 25-9, 25-19, and Wabash came out on
top 25-18, 25-22, 25-15.
The junior varsity games went to the Indians 25-15, 25-14.
Chargers Nip Knights in OT
Caleb Hatfield scored a goal in the first overtime period to lead the
Carroll Chargers to a 2-1 victory over the Norwell Knights in boys
soccer action Thursday at Norwell.
Carroll raised its record to 2-1-1 and 1-0 in Northeast Hoosier Conference action. Norwell slipped to 2-1-1 and 0-1.
The Chargers took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Nick Anderson at 35:26 of the
first half. Norwell's Brent May knotted up the score with a goal at
22:27 of the first half.
The score remained deadlocked through the second half as the defenses and goalkeepers thwarted the offenses.
Carroll goalkeeper Nick Morken had 5 saves, while Norwell netminder Jamie Feldheiser had 8 saves over 94 minutes of action.
Aaron Klansek assisted on May's goal.
In the junior varsity match, Carroll won 4-1. Trey Williams scored
Norwell's goal. Norwell goalkeeper Darik Boutsaboualoy had 2 saves and
Gavin Thiele 6. The Knights' record now stands at 2-2.
Delta Battles Past Lady Raiders
The Delta Eagles girls golf team scored a 206-215 victory over the
Southern Wells Raiders Thursday afternoon at Albany Golf Club.
Delta's Laura Harris and Southern Wells' Heather Roush finished tied
for medalist honors each with a 46 on the par 36 back nine. Roush
birdied the par five 18th hole and parred the 10th and 17th holes.
Harris recorded three pars on holes 12, 13 and 16.
Amanda Jordan shot a 49 for the Eagles. Skyler Wright added a 54 and
Lyndsey Snyder netted a 57. Casey Tobias finished with a 58.
Liz Lewellen shot a 52 for the Raiders. Liz Towne had a 58 and Kelsey Bonewit a 59. Ashle Pietz shot a 74.
Delta defeated the Raider jayvees 226-276. Kristy Penrod shot a 58 for the Raiders.
East Noble Tops Norwell Golfers
East Noble's Lina Pasquali and Norwell's Kaylee Imel dueled it out at
Timber Ridge golf course in Bluffton and Pasquali came out on top to
lead her team to a 168-176 victory Thursday.
Pasquali shot an even par 36 on the front nine to lead East Noble in
the Northeast Hoosier Conference meet. Imel finished with a 37.
Marisa Akerman helped East Noble with a 41, followed by Amber Black with 44, Kylee Edwards with 47 and Heather Kretler 47.
Mackenzie Warwick shot a 45 for Norwell, while Trisha Ulmer and Grace Adams each shot a 47. Sarah Johnloz carded a 52.
East Noble also won the junior varsity match 200-213. Erika Schermehorn
had a 45 for East Noble and Tabby Smith had a 48. Gabby Clontz and
Ashley Johnston each shot a 50 to lead Norwell. Natalie Layton,
Courtney Brodie and Keri Dahn finished out, respectively, with a 56, 57
and 58.
Bluffton Middle School Passes on Sale
Bluffton Middle School 2005-06 athletic passes are on sale in the high
school office. Passes are good for all middle school home events,
excluding tournaments. Cost is $20 for adults and $15 for students.
Passes are non-transferable. Purchase deadline is Sept. 9.
Basketball Shoot at Wildcat Festival
A basketball shoot will be held Saturday at the Markle Wildcat
Festival, starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Markle Park basketball court.
The free event is open to everyone and there are seven age groups.
Winners will receive $20 gift certificates to East of Chicago Pizza.
