Bluffton native nets national distinction

Dr. Michael R. Elliott, a professor of biostatistics at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, is the recipient of the prestigious Cox award given to a statistician in early to mid-career who has made significant contributions to one or more of the areas of applied statistics in survey methodology, experimental design and biostatistics.

The national award was presented to him in Washington, D.C., at the annual meeting of the Washington chapter of the American Statistical Association where he also gave the keynote address, “Probability Sampling in the 21st Century: Obsolescent or Cutting-Edge?” The award consisted of a plaque and a $1,000 honorarium.

Dr. Elliott is a 1981 graduate of Bluffton High School and earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago and his Masters and PhD degrees at the University of Michigan. He previously was on the staff of the University of Pennsylvania before returning to Michigan where he has taught for the past five years. He instructs doctoral students in biostatistics, survey methodology and bayesian statistics.

He is the son of Barbara J. Elliott of Bluffton.
