Getting pumped up for the 100th street party

advertisement:

I may regret this at a later date, but for a guy who’s not much of a street fair fan, I’m pretty pumped up.

At least, relatively speaking.

The 100th anniversary of anything is a pretty big deal. Our local board of Bluffton Street Fair leaders have been eyeing the year 2010 for more than a few. Rhonda Ryan, as chairperson for the upcoming 100th edition this September, began her work somewhere around two years ago. She’s excited. If you have any doubts, check out the video in the “Bluffton Street Fair” blog in the “Blog Bank” on our Web site (www.news-banner.com).

I’ve been coming around a bit in my appreciation of the annual fair, so I’d been contemplating the upcoming event since the close of last year’s fair. It’s not often a community gets to celebrate these things and I want to help see it done right.

So, I guess you could say, I’m “all in.”

Having met with Street Fair board prez Jon Brown and Ryan a few weeks ago, and having attended the board’s annual meeting Tuesday night, it looks like the fair is shaping up to be one to remember. We’ll be following progress on the plans, gathering history tidbits here and there, helping to promote the historical society’s pictorial history book (get your pre-orders in now and save $5!) and putting together a commemorative official program.

Joe Ayres encourages you to start growing a beard (well, at least you guys), Nora Lavine has plans for ladies and their hats, Jerry Christianson wants to build a trolley car, Tom Elliott is looking for a clown or two, and Keith Frauhiger hopes to bring the Ball State Marching Band and the Indianapolis Motorcycle Police squad to Bluffton. Keep your fingers crossed for the double-ferris wheel, and we hopefully will be waving to the governor during the opening night parade.

And that’s just for starters.

And I promise not to complain about the fair gumming up our parking lot and complicating life right outside our door.

This year.

Let’s have some fun.
