Gas leak in downtown Bluffton

In spite of what the banner says, there’s no joy in downtown Bluffton this afternoon as firefighters evacuated everyone between Market Street south side and Washington street north side between Marion and Main Streets for a major gas leak. The gas leak was caused when city utility crews struck a high pressure gas line while repairing a water main. NIPSCO is on scene at Walnut Street a half block west of Johnson Street and is in the process of setting up a bypass around the line to effect repairs to the leak. The mist shown spraying up behind the backhoe is gas escaping from the line. Firefighters and city crews can be seen standing in the background monitoring the leak. The sound from the leak was deafening as the gas roared out. Further updates can be found on twitter.com/newsbanner, on this website and in tomorrow’s News-Banner. (Photo by Glen Werling)
