What a great challenge for the new Indiana state administration led by Governor Mitch Daniels and the newly voted and established Indiana Department of Agriculture!
And right in Wells County too!
The planned new Wells County fuel ethanol plant with its by-product also for livestock feed -- strongly and actively backed by U.S. Senators Richard Lugar and Evan Bayh along with Congressman Mike Pence -- provides a top-class opportunity to restore and revive Indiana in economic development -- a cause greatly championed by Governor Daniels through his campaign and early administration strides.
The huge potential economic benefits, including a large area market for corn and the probably once-only chance for Indiana to gain the Eastern Corn Belt Ethanol Plant capital status, are giant opportunities for Indiana.
Also, consider these other points from a public good view:
-- Petroleum imports have been noted as accounting for as much as 70 percent and more of the U.S. federal trade deficit, also making America more dependent on outside energy. Ethanol can save the U.S, Treasury billions.
-- Ethanol creates jobs, and provides better markets to farmers.
-- Ethanol fuel is environmentally beneficial, reducing levels of pollution and carcinogens in the air. It is an additive or substitute, whatever is needed.
While Indiana’s Department of Agriculture is understandably just getting off the ground, the governor and his able aides have a real chance to give it distinction and strength for the benefit of Hoosier life and economics by putting Indiana on the map in this field.
With the federal leadership from Indiana solidly on board, the Indiana hopes are jump-started on what could be a break-through to a real upswing for the Hoosier state and area.
