Holmes lifts Tigers to 9-7 win over Starfires

Tyler Holmes drilled a three-run home run and drove in four runs overall to power the Bluffton Tigers to a 9-7 victory over South Adams in a non-conference game between two Allen County Athletic Conference rivals on Thursday at Bluffton.
The Tigers (15-6) scored six runs in the fourth inning to blow the game open.
Tanner McKinney and Colin Penrod combined on the pitching mound to stop the Starfires. McKinney notched the win, allowing five runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batsman. He struck out seven. Penrod worked three innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and struck out four.
Cameron Gerber had two hits, including a double, and a RBI. Gary Green smacked a solo home run. Jarred Carpenter, Mark Vanderkolk and Penrod each drove in one run for the Tigers. Penrod and Holmes each had two hits.
In the second inning, Gerber had a RBI double to knock in Carpenter, who was hit by a pitch, and Holmes singled to drive in Gerber.
John Striker led the Starfires (6-19) with five RBIs. He had four doubles in four at-bats.
Andrew Smith added a solo home run and single for South Adams.
Nick Batt was the losing pitcher, allowing eight runs on eight hits, two walks and two hit batsmen.
