After three years as superintendent at Bluffton-Harrison Metropolitan School District, Dr. Julie Wood notified the board Monday that she is resigning her position effective the end of this school year.
Wood said she had applied for and been accepted as superintendent of Monroe-Gregg School District, in Monrovia, approximately 20 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
Her last day at Bluffton will be June 30 and she will report for duty at Monroe-Gregg soon after.
Wood made the announcement at the executive session Monday evening. She said the decision was meant to ease a burden on her family, and not due to any school-related issue.
For the past several weeks Wood’s husband, Steve, has been commuting to his job at Emcor, on the west side of Indianapolis. She felt it was only logical she keep an eye open for a position closer to his employer.
“We have been thinking about this a long, long, long time,” she said.
“It was a tough decision. I have never worked with better administrators, teachers, support staff and board members in my career,” Wood said.
B-H board president Darryl Elliott is the last remaining board member involved in the process to hire Wood three years ago.
He said Wood has been keeping the board apprised of the situation and they support her decision to do what’s best for her family.
“We understand where she’s going and we understand her reasoning and we sincerely wish her all the best,” he said.
Wood said while she will miss the Bluffton community she is excited about the move and the new challenges she will face.
Monrovia is a growing community. Current enrollment at the school district is 1,540 students. That’s up from 1,494 last year, 1,393 the year before and 1,343 in 2005-2006.
Elliott said the board has already begun the process of selecting a new superintendent, something he has had some experience with.
“It’s not an easy process and it’s probably a 3 to 4 month process,” he said. “But we take it very seriously. We’re going to see who’s available to us and we’re going to make the best choice for our schools.”
