Bluffton boys swim past SA; Bates breaks record

Hunter Copeland finished first in two events and three divers accounted for 13 points in helping the Bluffton Tigersharks overcome the South Adams Starfires on Thursday in a double swim meet at the Bluffton Middle School pool.

The Tigersharks edged South Adams 97-88, while the South Adams girls rolled to a 114-69 victory.

Copeland won the 100-meter freestyle in a time of 1:00.97 and captured the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:09.82.

Logan Stout led the Bluffton divers with a first-place score of 196.35, followed by teammates Spencer Lind and Alec Betz with scores of 122.8 and 121, respectively.

Bluffton’s 200-meter freestyle relay team of Ian Baumgardner, Matt Dann, Sam Walburn and Chris Conley also took a first place in 1:57.09.

The South Adams’ boys were led by double winners Alex Habegger, Justin Klopp and Eric Feeney.

In the girls’ meet, Bluffton was led by Susannah Bates with a pair of firsts, including a record-breaking time of 1:23.13 in the 100-meter breaststroke. The previous record of 1:23.28 was set by Kristyn Spera. Bates also won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:40.67.

Teammate Haley Huffman added a first in the 50-meter freestyle in 30.08 seconds. She also teamed up with Bates, Lindsey Beer and Jessica Steffen to take first place in the 200 free relay in 2:06.98.

The South Adams girls were led by first-place individuyal finishers Alyssa Sharp, Taylor Turner, Alexis Fox, Jessica Sharp, Erika Waugh and Allison Beitler. The Starfires also won the medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.
