Roads glazed with ice have been blamed for eight traffic accidents in Wells County.

One of those accidents involved Marcia Gregg of rural Bluffton. That accident happened a mile north of Poneto on a Meridian Road that was so icy, it was difficult to walk on it, let alone drive on it.

Gregg suffered minor injuries in that crash.

There is a threat of rain, freezing rain, ice, and snow starting this afternoon and continuing through early Friday afternoon that could continue to make travel hazardous.

The rash of accidents started at 1:24 p.m. Wednesday when Marcia R. Lee, 28, of 307 East Morton Lane, Ossian, was driving north on 600E about a mile and a half north of Tocsin.

The road was a sheet of ice just north of the Eight Mile bridge and Lee’s 2000 Ford Explorer slid sideways off the road after hitting the ice. It  flipped when it struck the west side ditch.

Lee suffered a knot to the back of her head along with other injuries. She was taken by Wells County EMS to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne for treatment., According to investigating officer, Deputy Ron Campbell of the Wells County Sheriff’s Department, Lee requested transport to Parkview because she was six months pregnant and that is the hospital where her obstetrician is located. She requested transport as a precaution.

Damage to her sport utility vehicle exceeded $5,000.

At 7:40 p.m., Gary Carpenter, 51, of 3715S-200E slid out of control on icy 200E south of 400S northeast of Poneto.

His 1995 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck spun off the road and slammed into an I&M utility pole. The impact did not break the pole. Damage to Carpenter’s pickup  exceeded $2,500.

At 8:14 p.m., a vehicle slid off of 400W south of 1100S near the Blackford County line. In that accident a utility pole was broken and lines were reported down. A state trooper reportedly covered the accident and no further details were available.

At 8:50 p.m., Amber N. DeHoff, 18, of 6400E-200N, Craigville, was driving west on 200N west of Ind. 301 just southwest of Craigville, when the 2005 Pontiac she was driving slid out of control on the icy roadway, slid off the north side of the roadway and into the ditch. Damage exceeded $1,000.

At 3:40 a.m. today,  Kaleb W. Grossman, 18, of 1470E-400S, Bluffton, was driving a 1993 Chevrolet Astro van south on Meridian Road when it started to slide just south of 1100S near the Blackford County line.

The van fishtailed out of control, slid off the west side of the road and flipped upon impact with the side ditch. The van flipped onto the driver’s side.

Damage exceeded $1,000.
