Tiger netmen edge Whitko
The Bluffton Tigers boys tennis team got back on track Thursday by defeating the Whitko Wildcats 3-2 at South Whitley.
Cameron Gerber and Cody Cochran were singles winners, while Gary Green and Drew Neuenschwander won their doubles match.
Gerber outlasted Kurt Boggs 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Cochran breezed past Trevor Sleights 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 match. Whitko’s No. 1 player Dan Aldea defeated Matthew Gerber 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In their No. 2 doubles spot, Green and Neuenschwander topped Grant St. Clair and Dylan LeTourneau 6-2, 6-2. The Wildcats’ No. 1 doubles of Seth Mowrey and Alex Winger tripped Jon Dauterman and Jackson Bates 6-3, 6-4.
The junior varsity Tigers won 4-1. Singles winners for Bluffton were Nick Huffman (8-3) and Chandler Okey. Winning in doubles were Bryan Bowman and Michael Vanderkolk  and Luke Bertsch and Josh Buckland. Whitko’s Josh Laroque defeated Zach Mezera 8-6.

Knights sweep AC netmen

The Norwell Knights boys tennis team swept up the Adams Central Jets 5-0 with their racquets Thursday evening at Monroe to improve to 4-0.
Jason Isch defeated Austin Neadstine 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Reid Imel blasted Josh Smith 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. Kyle Fillman blitzed Kam Fiechter 6-0, 6-0 in three singles.
In No. 1 doubles, Tim Baker and Ross Mathews came back to beat Kyle Andrews and Landon Wheeler 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Kyle Reinhard and Thye Petty bested Evan Timmons and Derek Roe 6-2, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles.
Norwell’s jayvee squad (4-0) rolled to an 8-1 triumph. Jasson Werling, Tanner Bowen, L.J. Reeve, Nick Imel and Tyler Hildenbrand were singles winners. Doubles winners were Kyle Isch and Brandon Taylor, Mitchell Wilson and Sean Cole and Joel Sauer and Dan Heckman.

Carroll boots Knights 4-1
The Carroll Chargers defeated the Norwell Knights boys soccer team 4-1 Thursday in a Northeast Hoosier Conference match at Fort Wayne.
Senior Tyler McClish scored the Norwell goal with an assist by freshman Damon Topp. Norwell goalkeeper Gavin Thiele made 12 saves.
Carroll scored three goals in the second half to break the match open.

East Noble golfers down Norwell

Despite the medalist efforts of senior Kaylee Imel, the Norwell Lady Knights fell to the East Noble Lady Knights in a Northeast Hoosier Conference dual match at Cobblestone golf course at Kendallville on Thursday.
Imel shot an even par 36 on the back nine to lead Norwell. Kristen Springer added a 48 and Ashley Johnston shot a 49. Cassie Herndon chipped in with a 56. Hannah Porrata rounded out the squad with a 58.
East Noble was paced by Erika Schermerhorn’s 39. Brittany Wyatt followed with a 41. Anna Pasquali shot a 43 and Conner Handshoe wrapped up the victory with a 47. Sadey Gamble closed her round with a 48.
East Noble climbed to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the NHC.

Leo freshmen nip Knights
The Leo Lions nipped the Norwell Knights 13-12 in freshman football action Thursday night at the Knights’ Courtyard.
Norwell’s touchdowns came on a 79-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Sink from Grant Baker and a 12-yard run by Al Albers. Josh Cook also played well on offense.
The Knights’ defense was led by Conner Whitesell with help from Cameron Buckhardt and Jacob Hostetter. Drew Dickey had an interception and a fumble recovery.

Otters to begin season
The Huntington-Wells Otters swim team will have callout meetings for new and returning swimmers and their parents at either of the following times and locations:
— Norwell Middle School cafeteria, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 6:30 p.m or;
— Huntington University Merillat Physical Education Complex, Thursday, Sept. 4, 6:30 p.m.
Membership in the Otters is open to swimmers ages 4-18, who are able to swim 1-2 lengths of a 25-yard pool unassisted. Training and instruction of the various strokes will be led by a qualified coaching staff, under the direction of head coach Don Cozad. Middle and high school swimmers are encouraged to participate to prepare for their respective school seasons.

Platt to receive award
 HUNTINGTON — Steve Platt, retired coach of the Huntington University men’s basketball team, will receive the Huntington University Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award at the organization’s annual dinner Sept. 4.

Elks golf tournament taking entries
The Bluffton Elks Lodge No. 796 scholarship golf tournament is scheduled for Sept. 14 at Timber Ridge golf course in Bluffton. The Florida Scramble will begin at 8:30 a.m. Individuals or teams may sign up at the lodge. Entry fee may vary according to Timber Ridge membership.
Norwell Baseball Club slates golf outing
