Tiger tennis squad tops Braves
Winning two of three singles matches and splitting the two doubles contests, the Bluffton Tigers edged the Bellmont Braves 3-2 in boys tennis Thursday at Decatur.
Bluffton’s No. 1 singles player, Cameron Gerber battled back to down Austin Bergdall 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. Meanwhile, Cody Cochran shot down Henry Narmont 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. Bellmont’s Mike Stidam dispatched Drew Neuenschwander 6-1, 7-5 in No. 3 singles.
Gary Green and Mark Vanderkolk teamed up for the Tigers at No. 2 doubles and staved off Kodee McIntosh and Devin Amecher 6-2, 7-5. The Braves’ No. 1 duo of Derek Thieme and Payton Selking tripped up Jon Dauterman and Jackson Bates 6-4, 6-1.
Bluffton’s junior varsity squad ambushed the Braves 7-1.
Nick Huffman won two matches, defeating Matt Stidam 8-2 and Adrian Dilley 8-0. Michael Vanderkolk beat Phil Bauman 8-6. Zach Mezera rolled over Nathan Brune 8-1. Bryan Bowman and Chandler Okey conquered Kyle Smith and Nick Faurote 8-3. Mitchel Meitzler beat Caleb Averill 8-1 and Alex Penrod blanked Ian Dilley 8-0.
Bellmont’s lone JV victory came in doubles with Connor Busick and Josh Baker beating Josh Buckland and Luke Bertsch 8-2.
Lady Knights sink Bellmont golfers
Norwell senior Kaylee Imel fired a three-under par 33 to lead the Lady Knights to a 184-192 victory over the Bellmont Squaws on Thursday at Decatur’s Grey Goose golf course.
The Lady Knights are 4-0 in dual meet action, including a 2-0 mark against Northeast Hoosier Conference foes.
Imel eagled the par four 15th hole and also birdied holes 10 and 14. She added five pars and bogeyed 18.
Ashley Johnston helped Norwell with a 44, while Kristen Springer shot a 50 and Hannah Porrata carded a 57. Cassie Herndon finished with a 59.
Bellmont fell to 1-4 and 0-2. Kaitlin Geyer led the Squaws with a 42, followed by Audrey Ortiz with a 45, Mallorie Phegley 46 and Casey Fee 59.
Leo boots Lady Knights 3-1
The Leo Lady Lions spoiled the Norwell Lady Knights’ first match on their new home field Thursday evening.
Morgan Delagrange, Alyssa Makridadis and Katie Pannabecker scored first half goals to lead Leo to a 3-1 victory. Norwell’s goal was netted by Caitlin Ailor with an assist by Kylie Dial.
Dial had 11 shots but could not find the back of the goal nets. Leo goalkeeper Rachel Lengacher made 11 saves, while Norwell’s keeper Amanda Welches stopped 15 shots. The Lady Knight slipped to 2-0 and the junior varsity team lost 1-0.
Heritage spikes Lady Knights
Alexa Kiess, a 2007 Allen County Athletic Conference first teamer, helped lead the Heritage Lady Patriots volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Norwell Lady Knights Thursday night at Monroeville.
Kiess had three service aces, 27 set assists and five blocks as the Lady Patriots swept Norwell 25-20, 25-22, 25-13. Abby Saalfrank led Heritage with nine kills and Courtney Faulstick also had five blocks. Whitney Scott also had three aces.
Norwell (1-1) was led by Kelsey Kline with four kills and seven digs. Haley Chaney and Andrea Vogel each had two kills. Vogel also had one block and two block assists. Elizabeth Ault had 20 digs. Mallory Bushee had six assists, two aces and seven digs.
In the junior varsity match, Heritage won in three games, 25-18, 18-25, 15-14.
Safety notice for Tiger football games
To ensure safety for all fans at Bluffton high school and middle school football games, the athletic department states that only Nerf footballs will be allowed into Fred F. Park Field. All plastic and leather footballs will be confiscated at the gate from the ticket takers or from school personnel. Only Bluffton elementary and middle school students will be permitted to play in the southeast grassy area within the stadium.
