Knights open cross country season
Alex Cushman, Sean Cossairt and Brandon Long each cracked the 18-minute mark for the Norwell Knights on Tuesday afternoon in the DeKalb Invitational boys cross country meet at Waterloo.
Only individual results were recorded and no team scores were kept.
Cushman led the Knights, finishing in front of Cossairt with a time of 17 minutes, 46 seconds. Cossairt was clocked in 17:48, followed by Long in 17:59. The other Norwell runners included Ethan Roebuck, who finished in 18:34, Ben DeVoe 19:03, Alex Schmidt 19:29, Brett Bennett 20:44, Jordan Blair 21:51 and Joe Kumfer 21:57.
“We ran better than last year,” commented Norwell coach Randy Hawkins. “Our top three runners were about 30 seconds faster than last year’s top three. Cushman, Cossairt and Long have to continue moving up. DeVoe had a great race and finished fifth guy for us. That is a confidence booster for him.  Schmidt had a nice race considering it was his first race. Bennett ran almost two minutes faster than last year. Kumfer also made great strides compared as he was about two minutes ahead of last year’s pace.
Seniors Tom Horn and Sean McAvoy did not run.
“It will be important to get Horn and McAvoy back in the lineup. On paper, (Horn) should be our No. 5 and (McAvoy) our No. 6. Horn will not run Saturday at Huntington, but (McAvoy) will,” added Hawkins.

Lady Starfires nip Knights 2-1
Two first-half goals by the South Adams Lady Starfires proved to be enough scoring to spoil the season opener for the Norwell Lady Knights soccer team.
South Adams held the Lady Knights to a second-half goal for the 2-1 victory at Berne. Maddie Moore put the Lady Starfires on the scoreboard with a corner kick goal. Ashton Morgan followed with a goal, assisted by Jana Beitler.
