NW board OKs 4-year contract with teachers

Northern Wells teachers will get a raise in pay for last year—and this year.

That was one of the decisions made by the Northern Wells School Board during a special meeting Wednesday.

Board members Gene Donaghy, Michelle Brown-Stohler, Debbie Miller, Scott Elzey and Donna Spear approved of a four-year teacher’s contract Wednesday evening that included a 2.5 percent pay increase for the 2007-08 school year and the 2008-09 school year.

The pay increase is retroactive to Aug. 12, 2007.

The pay raise is, of course, in addition to the incremental increase teachers receive automatically for each year of experience they gain. The percentage bump in salary for the increment is based on the degree of teachers’ education and their years of experience.

Language in the contract is binding for four years, however anything can be renegotiated by mutual consent of the teachers and the school board.

Likely salaries will be one non-language issue negotiated on an annual basis, admitted Supt. Dr. Scott Mills.

Under the new contract, a teacher just starting his or her career at Northern Wells with a bachelor’s degree will be paid $32,022 this coming school year. The top end of the scale — a teacher with 25 years of experience and a doctorate — is $66,944 for the 2008-09 school year.

Teachers ratified the contract Wednesday morning, but Mills was not sure what the vote tally was.

In other business, the board members hired the following people to extra-curricular positions:

— Brenda Rockwell and Monica Huffman as Ossian Elementary science fair sponsors.

— Jamie Misch as Ossian Elementary student council sponsor.

— Meghann Kenline as Ossian Elementary spell bowl coach.

— Kristine Everett as a team leader at Norwell Middle School.

— Jessica Dutt as Lancaster Elementary afternoon latchkey worker.

— MaryAnn Davis as Lancaster Elementary morning latchkey worker.

The board also learned that Nathan Stauffer has resigned as a fifth-grade teacher at Lancaster Elementary School. He is taking on an administrative position in the North Miami school system.

The next regular meeting of the board is set for Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 5:30 p.m.
