An accident on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) Tuesday evening has claimed the life of six-year-old Landen Bailey, son of Cletus and Jennifer Bailey, 2605W-1000N, Markle.
According to a report by Indiana Conservation Officer Erick Bolt, Bailey was riding on the ATV with a seven-year-old girl as the driver. She was driving in a circular course around a barn on the Bailey property and came around one corner too fast. The 2004 Polaris ATV rolled over, ejecting the Bailey youth and the girl.
Wells County 911 emergency dispatch received the call at 8:21 p.m. of the ATV accident. The caller reportedly advised that CPR had been initiated on the boy.
Wells County EMS was dispatched to the scene as were the Uniondale Fire Department First Responders. Firefighters set up a landing zone for Lutheran Air. The boy was flown to Lutheran Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:22 p.m.
The girl was transported by Wells County EMS to Lutheran where she was treated for scrapes and abrasions to her knees, legs and face.
The accident report noted that neither the girl nor the boy were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
An autopsy is being performed to determine an exact cause of death.
Jenkins was assisted in his investigation by deputies from the Wells County Sheriff’s Department.
