Knight linksters top Columbia City

The Norwell Knights defeated Columbia City Friday afternoon in high school boys varsity golf action at the Eagle Glen course in Columbia City 151-167.

McCormick Clouser posted an impressive 32 on the front nine to take medalist honors, while Drew Imel posted a one-over-par 37. Other scores for the Knights were Brandon Bennett 40, Ross Mathews 42 and Taylor Imel 42. Taylor Landis led the host school with a 34.

The junior varsity also won 189-194.

Homestead tops Knights

The Norwell Knights baseball squad lost a close contest in an Northeast Hoosier Conference matchup Friday evening. The visiting Spartans scored the go ahead run in the top of the seventh inning and hung on for a 5-4 win.

Ryne Otis had two hits in two at-bats to lead the Knights. Logan Dafforn had a lead-off double in Norwell’s second inning and later scored. Bryce Murphy went the distance for the Knights and struck out five batters and walking just three.

Norwell scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning in a two-out rally. Murphy started it with a single followed by a single by Otis. Coach Kelby Weybright put on a double steal, with Murphy scoring on a throwing error. Jason Isch then singled Otis in.

The Knights couldn’t hold on to their early lead, however, as the Spartans came back in the top of the third with a three-run home run by Homestead’s Bob Glover, who also took the victory on the mound for the visitors.

Norwell’s record is now 11-10 on the season, with a 3-3 conference mark.

Lady Knights defeat New Haven

Courtney Brodie and Amanda Meyer each drove in two runs Friday evening as they helped lead the Norwell Lady Knights softball team to a 7-5 victory over the New Haven Lady Bulldogs in Northeast Hoosier Conference action.

Alyssa Shutt (2-3) pitched the completed game for the win as Norwell upped its record to 8-14. Shutt allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and two walks.

Amanda Welches drove in one run and was 2 for 2 with two doubles and a walk. Brodie and Meyer each singled twice. Daniel Davis had three hits, including a double, and one RBI. Kelsey Kline also knocked in one run. Natalie Meyer also singled twice.

Physicals for Bluffton athletes slated

Sports physicals for Bluffton high school and middle school students, sponsored by the Bluffton Athletic Booster Club, will be given for the 2008-09 school year on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13-14 at the high school. The physicals will be held from 6-8 p.m. Enter the high school at door 4 and do not arrive any later than 7:45 p.m. so that our volunteers will be able to leave on time. Cost is $10. Physical forms may be picked up in the high school and middle school offices and should be brought that night.

Elementary track meet at Norwell

Entry forms for the Northern Wells Elementary Schools Track and Field meet must be returned by Tuesday, May 13. The meet will be held Friday, May 16 at 4:30 p.m. at Norwell. The track opens for warm-up and demonstrations at 3:45 p.m. Cost is $1 for three events.
