Scott Woodward finishing strong
Coastal Carolina freshman Scott Woodward, a 2007 Norwell graduate from Markle, leads the Chanticleers baseball team and the Big South Conference with a .505 on-base percentage. The freshman leads the league in walks (35), stolen bases (30 of 35) and hit-by-pitches (20). In the last 10 games, Woodward has 13 walks and has driven in eight runs with a .540 on-base percentage.
The 17th-ranked Chanticleers (38-11, 12-3 Big South) play its final regular season home series May 9-11 against High Point (18-27, 8-7 Big South) at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. Coastal is coming off a three-game set at Georgia Tech, winning the middle game 10-9.
Woodward, who plays outfield and second base, is hitting .349 with 32 runs batted in, 10 doubles and six home runs.

Knights give Barons the cold shoulder
Although the temperature had dipped down to 46 degrees when the Norwell Knights teed off at Bridgewater West golf course in Auburn, they were able to post some impressive scores Thursday in defeating the host DeKalb Barons.
On the par 35 front nine, four of the five Knights were bunched together in the mid-30s for a 143 team score. Drew Imel led the way with a one under par 34, while McCormick Clouser and Taylor Imel each shot a one over 36 and Ross Mathews a 37. Brandon Bennett added a 46.
DeKalb finished with a 153. Nick Kelley shot a 35 and Riley Zonker added a 38. Adam Strahan and Ryan Boester each shot a 40. Spencer Kelham added a 43.
The Norwell jayvees completed a sweep by winning 182-194. Chris Clontz was the leader with a 43, followed by Zach Johnloz with 44 and Isaac Tomac with 47. Nick Earnest and Drew Williams each shot a 48.

Lady Tigers clip Leo 4-3
Four Lady Tigers led the Bluffton girls softball team to a 4-3 victory over the Leo Lady Lions on Thursday in Allen County Athletic Conference action at Leo-Cedarville.
Sophomore pitcher Sheyann Pace was supported by the two-hit efforts of Ashlie Holsinger, Eliza Walburn, Jordan Moore and Shelby Lesh. Pace got the win, striking out two and spreading out six hits. Moore drove in two runs, while Walburn and Lesh each had one RBI.
Bluffton finishes the ACAC with a 3-4 mark, while the Lady Tigers are 10-13 overall.
In the doubleheader last Saturday against Norwell, Chelsea Thompson hit a three-run home run.

Homestead rocks Norwell jayvees
The Homestead Spartans handed the Norwell Knights their second straight Northeast Hoosier Conference junior varsity baseball loss Thursday at Fort Wayne. The Spartans out hit Norwell 9-2 in winning the five-inning game 13-3.
Brandon Gerber (2-2) was the Knights’ starting pitcher and took the loss. Dakota Parker pitched the final two innings.
The Knights scored twice in the third inning. Wayne Saalfrank walked and later scored when Landon Curry reached on an error. Curry scored on a single by Jasson Werling.
Gerber led off the fourth with a double, stole third base and scored on a ground out by Saalfrank.
Norwell is now 9-5 and 3-3 in the NHC.

Physicals for Bluffton athletes slated
Sports physicals for Bluffton high school and middle school students, sponsored by the Bluffton Athletic Booster Club, will be given for the 2008-09 school year on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13-14 at the high school. The physicals will be held from 6-8 p.m. Enter the high school at door 4 and do not arrive any later than 7:45 p.m. so that our volunteers will be able to leave on time. Cost is $10. Physical forms may be picked up in the high school and middle school offices and should be brought that night.

Free physicals for Norwell athletes

Fort Wayne Orthopaedics (FWO) will be offering free physical examinations for the 2008-09 school year to Norwell High School athletes at its Fort Wayne location at 7601 West Jefferson Blvd. Physicals will be given Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to noon. Norwell students are asked to come between 10 and 10:30 a.m. Each student should bring a physical form. Forms may be picked up in the athletic office.

Elementary track meet at Norwell

Entry forms for the Northern Wells Elementary Schools Track and Field meet must be returned by Tuesday, May 13. The meet will be held Friday, May 16 at 4:30 p.m. at Norwell. The track opens for warm-up and demonstrations at 3:45 p.m. Cost is $1 for three events.
