Members, families and community supporters gathered at the annual Norwell FFA awards banquet in the high school cafeteria on Friday, April 11. The evening was dedicated to honoring those members who have been apart of the organization and who have excelled in various categories.
Special speakers of the evening were Jill Riley-Indiana State FFA Reporter from Trafalger, Indiana. Plus, Norwell FFA member Veronica Nicholson, who recited by memory, the five paragraph FFA Creed written by E.M. Tiffany.
Special thanks and recognition were given to school administrators, teaching staff, janitorial/maintenance staff and various parents, volunteers and families, for volunteering their time toward the Norwell FFA Chapter this year.
Recognition was given to Dennis and Darlene Fiedler. They were the recipients of the Honorary Chapter Degree. It is bestowed to any individual or family in the community that has donated their time and support towards the chapter members for consecutive years.
The Star Greenhand plaque was earned by first year member Bradley Heckber. The Dekalb award/top senior award sponsored by Monsanto Company was given to Kara Freds. Star in Agriculture Placement was won by Kara Freds. Star in Agribusiness plaque was won by Troy Fiedler. The Star Farmer award was earned by Chad Careins.
Scholastic pins were given to Veronica Nicholson, Jordan Burke, Brock Caley and Jay Fiechter.
Top five fruit sales individuals were given trophies, 1st Chad Careins, 2nd Kara Freds, 3rd Stephanie Meyer, 4th Andy Dobler, and 5th Bradley Heckber. Earning their FFA jackets this year Andy Dobler, Bradley Heckber, Joshua Barkley, and Ashley Bowling. Top five flower sales individuals, 1st Stephanie Meyer, 2nd Kaylah Sink, 3rd Ashley Brock, 4th Kara Freds and 5th Veronica Nicholson.
A special honor was presented by Blake Johnson and Zach Elder in memory of Kane Krinn who was a Norwell FFA member. His family then each received a photo frame of him from the entire chapter membership.
The senior class was recognized for their contributions and then made personal announcements of their future goals and career plans. Plus, senior blankets were then given to Kori Brewer, Chad Careins, Jeremy Penrod, Troy Fiedler, Katie Brindle, Jay Fiechter, Lindsey Prezbindowksi, Kara Freds, Sarah Calvisky, Amy VanCamp.
And rounding out the evening, members throughout the year competed for the top ten members. Points are given for every event or activity they participate in. This year the following members earned in the top ten 10th-Joshua Barkley, 9th-Jordan Burke, 8th -Bradley Heckber, 7th-Kori Brewer, 6th-Kaylah Sink, 5th-Blake Johnson, 4th-Stephanie Meyer, 3rd-Chad Careins, 2nd-Troy Fiedler, and 1st-Kara Freds. Freds, has earned top points member for the following years of 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
