The Heritage Lady Patriots scored two runs in the third inning and went on to defeat the visiting Southern Wells Lady Raiders 4-1 in Allen County Athletic Conference softball Thursday at Monroeville.
Heritage upped its season record to 7-5, while the Lady Raiders slipped to 5-7 and 2-1 in league play.
Dani Warfield started Southern Wells’ first inning with a single, but she was forced out on a fielder’s choice by Natalie Lewellen. Lewellen moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Grimm and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Lady Raiders had a chance in the fourth when Mychal Chandler led off with a single and Grimm followed with a double. However, the Lady Patriots’ defense left Chandler and Grimm stranded on base.
The Raiders had another chance in the fifth when Cathy Boxell drew a walk, and Meghan Prible reached on an error. Warfield laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Once again, the Heritage defense held.
The Lady Patriots scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Warfield tried to start a two-out rally in the seventh with a double, but she was left stranded at second.
Cristin Carter was the losing pitcher, giving up six hits, two earned runs, walking two and striking out five. Kristin Wright got the win for Heritage, giving up one earned run on four hits, one walk, and struck out six.
Wright also tripled, doubled and knocked in two runs. Darcy Scherer tripled, singled and drove in one run. Jamie Gilbert also plated a run.
