Wells County issues first same-sex marriage license

A little before 2 p.m. Wells County issued its first marriage license to a same-sex couple.

A representative of a same-sex couple — John Holzinger and Lamont Humbracht —called the Clerk’s office earlier today. Clerk Yvette Runkle said the representative demanded that her office issue a license or he would file a contempt of court lawsuit. Runkle then called the county attorney, Roy Johnson, who talked with the attorney general’s office, which suggested that Runkle should issue it until further rulings are made.
