Street Fair working on storage and scholarships

June 11, 2013 — By MARK MILLER

Leaders of the Bluffton Free Street Fair hope to raise enough money to build a storage facility and also establish a scholarship fund.
With the annual event just three months away, board members held their usual June meeting Monday evening but the focus was on a new effort.
Board President Tom Elliott reports that the barn the group has been using for years to store the stage and bleachers is no longer available. Board member George Moore has indicated he would donate a lot for the organization to build a storage barn on.
The board is initiating what Elliott calls a “marketing/fundraising/scholarship effort” which will be led by Tracy Houtz.
“Our initial goal is to raise money for the building,” Elliott said. “But I’d really like to see us also raise enough to provide a $1,000 scholarship to each of the three schools.”
Elliott said that while the fair has been here for a long time — more than 100 years — “nothing like this has been tried.
“We’re trying to give back to all the kids who go to the fair every year,” he said.
