Panos closes its doors

December 11, 2013

Dr. Marcelo Gavilanez helps move an exam table out of the Panos Free Clinic Tuesday after it closed permanently in November. The clinic operated for 22 years for those who couldn’t afford medical care through traditional channels, but it couldn’t sustain service with a dwindling pool of volunteers. The medical equipment — from the tables to the bandages and the medication that lined the shelves — will be donated to a developing clinic in Misak, Haiti. The clinic will be the only one of its kind in about 30 miles and will serve about 30,000 people. (Photo by Chet Baumgartner)
