Knights roll on to state finals
June 10, 2013
Norwell and Jasper, two teams that are no strangers to the state finals stage, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the state high school baseball championship.
The game will be played at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis.
Both teams are 32-3. Norwell punched its return ticket to the state finals with a 5-2 semi-state victory over Western of Howard County Saturday in Kokomo, while Jasper — playing at home — clobbered Crawfordsville 11-1 in six innings in its semi-state game.
Norwell has won the Class 3A championship twice, the first time in 2003 and the second time in 2007. Jasper is a five-time state champion, winning in 1996 and 1997 before the tournament was split into classes and then won the 3A title in 1998, 2000, and 2006.
That 2006 championship came at Norwell’s expense. The Wildcats defeated the Knights 13-12 in the championship game, Norwell’s only runner-up finish at state. Jasper has finished second once, in 2010.
This is Norwell’s first trip to the state finals in which Kelby Weybright has not been the Knights’ coach. Andy McClain took over the Norwell program this season. McClain also is no stranger to the state finals; McClain was the coach of Indianapolis Brebeuf last year, and his team played in the Class 3A championship game.
