Assessor’s proposal deserves a more thorough review

Wells County Assessor Rick Smith feels like he’s only doing his job, looking out for his 30,000 constituents, making sure that they are all treated fairly. The county assessor “shall examine and determine the accuracy of every personal property tax return,” he says, quoting the state statutes.
So he was taken aback when he informed County Council last week that he intends to hire a firm to “audit” business personal property returns to ensure tax assessments are correct — and was met with some pretty firm resistance.
